Upper GI scopy, also known as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used to examine the upper part of the digestive system. This includes the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It helps doctors identify the cause of symptoms such as heartburn, persistent nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss. During the procedure, a flexible tube with a camera and light (endoscope) is passed gently through the mouth into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The endoscope transmits real-time images to a monitor, allowing the doctor to detect ulcers, gastritis, tumors, polyps, inflammation, or bleeding. Tissue samples (biopsies) can also be collected for laboratory examination. In some cases, minor treatments, such as removal of polyps or stopping bleeding, can be performed during the procedure. The procedure is typically done under local anesthesia and mild sedation, making it minimally invasive and safe. It usually takes 15–30 minutes, and most patients can resume normal activities the same day. Mild throat soreness, bloating, or discomfort may occur after the procedure, but serious complications are rare.
